Understanding Irish Stamps

Irish Residence Permits (IRP) are endorsed with a Stamp number that defines your work and residency rights. Here is a plain-English guide.

Stamp 1

Employment Permit Holder

Issued to those working on a DETE work permit. You can only work for the employer named on your permit unless you obtain a new permit.

Work: Employer-specific only
Stamp 1G

Graduate Permission

Issued to graduates of Irish universities seeking employment. Valid for 12 months (24 months for NFQ Level 9+). Any employer, any sector.

Work: Open, any employer
Stamp 2

Student Permission

Issued to students on full-time courses at private colleges. Allows up to 20 hours per week during term and 40 hours per week during holidays.

Work: 20 hrs term / 40 hrs holiday
Stamp 2A

Student (No Work)

Issued to students at publicly funded institutions (universities). Does not include work rights — a separate work permit is required.

Work: Not permitted
Stamp 3

No Recourse to Work

Typically issued to dependants of non-EEA permit holders, retired persons, and those on certain visitor or non-work permissions.

Work: Not permitted
Stamp 4

Long-Term Residency / Open Work

No employment permit required. Available after holding a CSEP for 21 months, or 5 years' legal residence. Most direct route to citizenship eligibility.

Work: Open, no permit needed
Stamp 4 EUFAM

EU/EEA Family Member

Issued to non-EEA family members of EU/EEA nationals exercising treaty rights in Ireland. Grants open work access without a permit.

Work: Open, no permit needed
Stamp 5

Without Condition as to Time

Granted after 8 years of legal residence. Equivalent to indefinite leave to remain — permission to remain in Ireland indefinitely with open work rights.

Work: Open, indefinite residency
